Meet MENDO: meet Mikel
Our series 'Meet MENDO' is where we introduce the people who make MENDO. In this episode: Mikel.
He might seem a bit inscrutable at times, and because of that, he’s often on the wrong side of badger at MENDO. Our editor Mikel van den Boogaard is, however, a very valuable asset to our company, both in our store and our publishing department. Mikel is as much of a do it all as he is a know it all, but he’ll be the first to admit it himself: “My biggest problem is that I’m a perfectionist, and at the same time I want to do too much. A combination that usually doesn’t work too well, unfortunately.”
Mikel started working at MENDO early 2017 as a store employee, but quickly moved to the office as a copywriter and editor. “I spend most of the days at the office, but you can still find me in the store (almost) every Sunday.” In the short period that he has worked at MENDO, Mikel has fulfilled the roles of store employee, photographer, copywriter and editorial coordinator, with aspirations that seem endless.
‘I have to say that I’m an over consumer of all media.’
‘I have to say that I’m an over consumer of all media.’
After studying Journalism, Mikel switched to the University of Amsterdam where he’s currently working on his bachelor’s degree in Media and Culture with an emphasis on film. “I have to say that I’m an over consumer of all media. Not to name names, but some of my colleagues would probably call it an addiction, haha. Within films, books, photography, music, art and fashion I’m always looking for incentives. On the one hand this means that I’m easily distracted, but on the other hand I’m aware of pretty much everything that’s relevant in these fields, which is pretty handy in my study and my work.”
That work has resulted in five publications thus far, with Streets of London and #Sendnudes as his personal highlights. “I did most of the editorial work for these projects, and I’m pretty excited about it. It’s crazy to think that a little over a year ago I was still tying shoelaces in a sneaker store and now I’m making books that are being sold all over the world. I would have never imagined that.”
Nevertheless, he feels that he’s at the right place now at MENDO. As he’s doing what he’s good at, and learning at the same time. “The few years before MENDO were kind of turbulent. It’s frustrating to know what you’re capable of, but not being able to do anything with it. Thanks to MENDO, and Roy in particular, I’ve found my groove and I’m able to use and develop my talents.”
One of the books Mikel has recently been working on as an editor is Streets Of London, part of the Streets of series, that MENDO started publishing since this year in collaboration with teNeues. Streets Of London will be available as of May 2018.
Mikel’s talents are put to use in many ways at MENDO, and Mikel is eager to work on new projects. “The coming year is going to be very big for us at MENDO, but for me personally as well. I hope to get my degree next year and continue working on the exciting projects at MENDO. I’ve been thinking about going abroad when I’m finished with my study, but maybe MENDO can even play a role in that as well. Still got a year to figure that out, so we’ll see where the time takes me. For now let’s focus on the next project, which to me, is the most exciting yet.”
