MENDO Bookstand wins European Product Design Award
The MENDO bookstand is now officially amazing, as she's the winner of a European Product Design Award. Become the proud owner of our award winner.
For years, bookstands have been MENDO’s number one book-related side product. We’ve offered various sorts of bookstand. In 2019 we joint forces with Amsterdam-based product development agency Local Makers, to create an all-new, exclusive bookstand design. After an extensive process of designing, testing and prototyping, the new MENDO Bookstand hit the market. From the way it was received and the popularity, we already knew that the MENDO Bookstand was a pretty decent product. To get recognition and confirmation from the connaisseurs, is a very encouraging bonus.
About the award
The European Product Design Award™ was created to recognize the efforts of talented international product designers who aim to improve our daily lives with their practical, well-thought-out creations. The organization rewards the strategic thinking and imagination which goes into making a great product. MENDO’s bookstand has won in the category Home Interior Products / Interior Decoration.
The MENDO Bookstand
The award winning bookstand, a design by Local Makers from Amsterdam.
The design process
The new MENDO bookstand was designed in collaboration with Local Makers, an Amsterdam-based product development agency. An extensive period of designing and prototyping, resulted in this reversible bookstand, crafted from one single piece of lightweight steel that cleanly fits into any interior, and is strong enough to carry almost any book.
Starting with the briefing and taking in consideration all their wishes and desires Local Makers sketched dozens of options of the book stand. From the multiple variations, there were chosen 3 winner that were presented to the client. The 3 options differed in style, material and shape, but where all in line with MENDO core identity. In order to present the visual appearance of the final design, Local Makers Projects made an in-house prototype of the book stand. Once we had the confirmation from the client we dived into the manufacturing phase.
'This was a great opportunity to design something that was understated, discreet, satisfying on the eye, and yes, extremely functional.’
The MENDO bookstand comes in a tailor-made box, which makes is a perfect gift.
“We were honored to work with a distinguished book store such as MENDO. MENDO represents class, quality and sophistication,” says Mark Austen, Director at Local Makers Projects. “When MENDO approached us to breathe new life into their existing bookstand, we were delighted to take the challenge. Local Makers Projects is about bringing ideas to life and Product Designer Gabi Potsa and I felt this was a great opportunity to design something that was understated, discreet, satisfying on the eye, and yes, extremely functional. The bookstand isn’t just suitable for huge avant-garde books, but also exposes elegant books in a beautiful, and delicate way. We were honored to receive this award. It is why we do what we do.”
