Visual inspiration #9
At MENDO, we love to be inspired by everything visual. This time, MENDO's Eddie Stok selected 10 inspiring images from 10 inspiring books.
1. Joel Meyerowitz: Where I Find Myself
Joel Meyerowitz revolutionised colour photography technique, which this image uses to full effect with its beautiful array of blue hues.

2. Cindy Sherman
The emotion on the model's face, and the spontaneous qualities of this image hide the fact that it is a carefully crafted self-portrait. To me, it is one of Sherman's most absorbing photographs.

3. Streets of Paris
In a city which is more divided by its river than unified by it, this images captures a serene moment of togetherness on the banks of the Seine.

4. Amsterdam Uncovered
The graphic color use and bold lines of this image draw me in every time I see it, and despite it's apparent simplicity, it continues to reveal new details to me each time.

5. Joel Meyerowitz: Provincetown
Meyerowitz captures his subject's bold presence with this static, full-length, centered composition. A vision in stripes which can't be ignored.

6. Rineke Dijkstra: The Louisiana Book
Using the same composition to emphasize her subject's pose to the opposite effect, Rineke Dijkstra perfectly captures the essence of adolescent awkwardness.

7. Ruben van Schalm: Paradise
Paradoxically, the crystal-clear water muddies the details of the subject's body, which forces the viewer to look at the image with undivided attention.

8. Erwin Olaf: I AM
As mysterious as it is meticulously prepared, this photograph draws you into its surreal details, filmic atmosphere, and dramatic narrative.

9. Ren Hang
From a crystal clear bath to a dark, unyielding pond, water is a recurring motif in Ren's work. Water shape-shifts between liberating and confining under his unique creative vision.
