Made by MENDO
About the booksWho will recognize a great book better than a bookstore? A bookstore run by graphic designers. Here’s why: at MENDO we get market feedback seven days a week, we are blessed to be surrounded by a bunch of talented, inspiring people – photographers, writers and publishers – and after being a bookstore for more than 15 years, we can easily say we know what book aficionados are looking for. Don’t you agree that initiating, creating and realizing jaw-dropping books now, only comes natural?
A MENDO publication is a well-designed book with visually stunning creative content, browsed by people to be amazed and inspired. The subject-matter is one of our pre-defined curated categories, fashion, photography, interior, sport, lifestyle, food and traveling. In general, a MENDO book is a piece of furniture in itself.
'For the photographer to look through the camera is different from looking directly at the figure. That's voyeuristic. The camera can do something you cannot do as a spectator: take a close-up.'

'Ballet inspires me. Humans have the capacity to express themselves in many art forms, but in dance – and certainly in classical modern ballet – I am always amazed at this incredibly high form of expression. It is so precise and so incredibly artisanal, I admire that enormously.'

This year, the grand master of Dutch dance, choreographer Hans van Manen, is celebrating his 90th birthday. This is celebrated internationally by leading ballet companies with the extensive Hans van Manen festival from June 8 to 29, 2022, the exclusive publication Dance in Close-Up and the eponymous exhibition at Galerie Ron Mandos in Amsterdam from June 19 to July 17, 2022. From the 1970s to the 1990s, Hans van Manen was not only one of the world’s leading choreographers, but also an internationally acclaimed photographer.
It was at this time that the then very young photographer Erwin Olaf met the renowned artist, who immediately took him by the hand and introduced him to the world of fine art and studio photography. This book celebrates their 40-year friendship with a photo series in which Van Manen directs moments from his choreographies, captured with the utmost precision by Erwin Olaf.
