‘A rare and fascinating insight into an ancient and delicious cuisine.’
From the world’s oldest recorded cuneiform recipes, some 4000 years ago, there is a straight line to the kitchen of Smuni Turan. Her recipes have been collected by her son Matay in Haniyé, which in Aramaic stands for ‘enjoy your meal’.
As a Christian minority in the Middle East, the Suryoye have often been persecuted and expelled and they now live scattered all over the world. They all still speak dialects of Aramaic, the language Jesus is believed to have spoken. And more importantly: they still cook the dishes every day that all Middle Eastern kitchens are indebted to.
About the author
Matay de Mayee was born in The Netherlands as a child of one of the first Suryoye families (also called Assyrians or Aramaic) established in the Netherlands. After studying Business Economics at the University of Amsterdam, he traveled the world for various employers such as NIKE. Three years ago he decided to change his professional life and follow his heart. He opened De Stijlkamer Amsterdam, a high-end multiple concept B&B in a historic Amsterdam canal house, with a focus on stay, shoots and culinary events. With HANIYÉ he debutes as a cookbook author.
